Quilts sind quasi Decken, die man am Fußende schließen und unter sich an der Isomatte befestigen kann. Dadurch spart man natürlich Gewicht, denn es gibt keinen Reißverschluß, keine Abdeckleiste, keine Kapuze und keinen Wärmekragen, wie bei einem normalen Schlafsack.
Ich habe mir schon vor Jahren einen Quilt genäht und immer wieder benutzt. Aber richtig glücklich wurde ich damit nicht. Egal wie ich den Quilt unter mir geschlossen oder auf der Matte befestigt habe, es kam bei jeder Bewegung kalte Luft hinein.
Also überlegte ich, wie man dieses Problem umgehen kann. Und dann fiel mir ein, dass ich auch bei einem herkömmlichen Schlafsack den Reißverschluss fast nie genutzt habe, da er immer klemmte und ich viel zu viel warme Luft verlor, wenn ich den ganzen Schlafsack geöffnet habe. Also entwarf ich einen Schlafsack, der an den gleichen Stellen Gewicht spart, wie ein Quilt, aber nur mit einer Öffnung am Kopfende. So bin ich leicht unterwegs und beim Schlafen rundherum geschützt vor kalten Luftzügen.
Der Außenstoff und die Synthetikfüllung wurden in regelmäßigen Abständen kältebrückenarm vernäht. Der Sack hat eine rechteckige Fußbox mit zwei Gurtbandschlaufen außen und innen. So kann man den Sack auf rechts und auf links einfach zum Lüften aufhängen. Am Kopfende befindet sich ein Kordelkanal mit zwei seperaten Kordeln. Hiermit kann man das Ende rechts oder links von sich um den Hals schließen, je nachdem in welche Richtung man sich gerne dreht.
Den Schlafsack habe ich nun schon etliche Male benutzt, auch um zu sehen, wo es Verbesserungspotential gibt. Mit dem Konzept an sich bin ich sehr zufrieden. Nur den Schnitt habe ich beim Nachfolgemodell etwas angepasst. Mehr dazu in Kürze…

RAY’S SLEEPING BAG (PROTOTYPE)
When it comes to sleeping, in the ultra-light trekking sector there is actually no way around quilts. That’s what I thought…
Quilts are pretty much blankets that you can close at the foot end and attach to the mattress underneath you. Of course this saves weight, because there is no zipper, no cover strip, no hood and no warmth collar like a normal sleeping bag has.
Years ago I made a quilt and used it over and over again. But I was not quiet happy with it. No matter how I closed the quilt underneath me or fixed it to the mat, cold air came in with every of my movements.
So I thought about how to get around this problem. And then I remembered that even with a conventional sleeping bag I almost never used the zipper because it was always stuck and I lost way too much warm air when I opened the whole sleeping bag. So I designed a sleeping bag that saves weight in the same places as a quilt, but only with an opening at the head end. So I can stay light and when I sleep I am protected from cold drafts.
The outer fabric and the synthetic filling were sewn at regular intervals without cold bridges. The bag has a rectangular foot box with two loops of webbing on the outside and inside. So you can easily hang the bag to let it air inside and outside. At the head end there is a cord channel with two separate cords. With this you can close the end on the right or on the left around your neck, depending on which direction you like to turn.
I have used the sleeping bag several times now, also to see where there is room for improvement. I am very satisfied with the concept itself. Only the cut has been adjusted a bit on the successor model. More about this shortly…
